TAGDev 2.0 Profile

TAGDEV 2.0 is a collaborative between RUFORUM, Mastercard Foundation, the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and life Sciences (GCHERA) and 12 African universities namely Egerton University (Kenya), Gulu University (Uganda), Africa University (Zimbabwe), University of Cape Coast (Ghana), Universite Nationale d’Agriculture (Benin), University of Bamenda (Cameroon), University of Free State (South Africa), Universite Mohammed VI, Polytechnique (Morocco), Uganda Martyrs University (Uganda), University of Eldoret (Kenya), University of Port Harcourt (Nigeria) and Malawi University of Science and Technology (Malawi).

The goal of TAGDev 2.0 is “Africa’s young people and their institutions drive inclusive, equitable and climate resilient socio-economic development in their societies.” This is underpinned by the development hypothesis that “a transformed higher agricultural education ecosystem will catalyze agricultural sectoral growth while also delivering development impacts by producing skilled and entrepreneurial young men and women who create jobs, products, and services for themselves and others while also contributing to communities’ resilient livelihood opportunities.”

The program focuses on three main outcomes:

  1. Expanded equal work opportunities for young women and men in the agricultural sector
  2. Improved climate adaptive agricultural production and productivity
  3. Strengthened quality of higher agricultural education outcomes in training, research and innovation

Desired Impact and Reach

  • Implement curriculum review, policy and system reform to improve education quality

  • Establish Agri-Food Systems Entrepreneurship Centers for training, research, and business creation

  • Participate in Community Action Research Projects (CARPs) connecting universities with communities

  • Support entrepreneurship development and business incubation for students

  • Contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts

  • Engage in partnerships with TVETs, private sector, and other ecosystem actors

  • Implement inclusive recruitment approaches to reach 70% female participation, 10% people with disabilities, and 25% refugees and displaced persons
